Nutrition is the single most important key to vigorous
long lives, says Charles M. Rosenblut, director of National Center for
Nutrition research (NCNR). “A decline in muscle mass is the most dramatic
change to come with age, but this condition gets little press coverage because
the condition has no name, unlike osteoporosis and other diseases usually
associated with aging, ” says Roseblut.
The loss muscle strength affects mobility, vigor,
breathing, and independence. Thus, intensive attention to nutrition and aging
is becoming one of the major issues of the day in health research and
information dissemination circles. Readers are advised to watch for changes in
the required daily amounts of vitamins and minerals for the elderly, to address
their special needs. As muscle mass declines with age, energy (calorie
requirements) declines, and the elderly eat less and miss more of their
required daily amounts of vitamins and minerals. Exercise helps to combat this
condition, but nutrition and vitamin absorption among the elderly is to be
given greater attention.
